The all-new next-generation pickups are here. introductionthe gmc sierra is all-new for 2007, redesigned from the ground up. The new sierra is built on a new platform, stiffer than before for better ride and handling. A sierra denali can handle business and family affairs as well as perform serious towing and hauling duties. These are not to be confused with the all-new 2007 version. lineupgmc sierra is available in eight powertrain configurations, five suspensions, three body styles, and a choice of interiors. It comes in standard, extended and crew cab versions. The work truck can be ordered with two bucket seats or a three-person bench seat. the extended cab has two rows of seats with rear-hinged rear access doors that open 170 degrees. The extended cab can be equipped with either a short bed (5-foot, 8-inch), standard or long bed. Optional head curtain airbags automatically inflate when sensors sense a severe impact to provide extra protection in the event of a rollover or secondary collision. Also available: driver and front-seat passenger side-impact air bags; anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrack active transfer case, ultrasonic rear park assist, onstar emergency notification. walkaroundthe design of the front end of the 2007 gmc sierra emphasizes the truck's wide stance. The gmc emblem is set amid dark horizontal bars in the middle of an upright and chrome-surrounded grille. The headlamps are a pair of stacked, jeweled lenses. The front bumper features round fog lamps and a wide air intake and wraps around the sides of the truck to the front lower edge of the front wheel wells. the denali gets it own chromed grilles, both the upper section and the air vent below the front bumper. the hood has a pair of long, narrow v-shaped power bulges and leads back to a steeply raked windshield. The windshield is tilted back for improved aerodynamics and enhanced highway fuel economy. the side view features slightly bulging and elongated fender flares that sweep down behind the headlamps. The sides of the cargo bed are higher than on previous models, and the exterior of the tailgate is sculpted, enhancing the rear view of the truck. Stacked tail lamps are on either side of the tailgate. nine colors are available on a truck that looks taller and stronger than its predecessor, yet also has improved aerodynamics that help give the sierra a highway fuel economy rating of as many as 22 miles per gallon with the 5. 3-liter v8 engine under the hood. an optional cargo management system is available for the bed with side rails and various cargo-carrying and cargo-controlling boxes and dividers and tie-downs. the gmc sierra and chevy silverado are built on the gmt900 platform, which shares most underpinnings with the yukon suv. The pickups get a unique rear frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. The sierra and silverado share mechanical components, with the exception of the unique features found on the sierra denali. compared with the previous-generation gmt800 truck, the new frame is 234 percent stiffer in torsion rigidity, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. This yields a smoother ride and better handling. It also allowed the engineers to reduce the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment as well as the gaps between fenders and bumpers, all of which enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. for 2007, the front suspension has switched from torsion bars to coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe 2007 gmc sierra boasts interior features popularized by the yukon sport utility, providing a much more upscale environment for the driver and passengers. Gmc hasn't forgotten about owners who use their trucks for work, however. So the sierra is available with the choice of a pure pickup interior or luxury-inspired accommodations more in the style of the yukon. the 'pure pickup,' as it's called, has a unique dashboard that is more driver-oriented and has larger switchgear and door handles that are designed to be easily manipulated by those wearing work gloves. The pure pickup dashboard has a double-decked glove box system, with the upper box just large enough to hold a pair of work gloves and a few smaller items. The pure pickup interior includes a 40/20/40 split front bench seat with the center section folding down to provide a large storage compartment and wide armrest. the suv-style luxury-oriented interior puts audio and ventilation system controls more easily within reach of the front-seat passenger and has two front bucket seats with a fixed center console with assorted storage compartments. gmc says the interior of the new sierra is 20 percent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to enhanced insulation materials, much like those used in the company's sport utility vehicles, and to aerodynamic improvements that reduce wind noise. rear seating is provided for three people in the extended and crew cab versions, with a comfortable 34. 3 inches of rear legroom in the extended cab and 38. 7 in the crew cab. access to the rear seating area of the extended cab is eased by rear-hinged doors that open to nearly flush with the rear quarterpanels. Sitting in the back seat of the extended cab is made more pleasant thanks to the fact that the windows in the rear access doors power fully down. driving impressionwe've driven three versions of the 2007 gmc sierra near scottsdale, arizona. We found all of them to be comfortable. The z71 is set up to enhance off-pavement driving. The z60 configuration is for what gmc calls 'maximum street performance' and includes big 20-inch wheels. The nht geometry is designed for sierra owners who need to tow heavier trailers. the slt crew cab 4x2 we drove was equipped with the vortec max 6. 0-liter v8 engine, and a 3. 75 rear axle. It was fitted with stabilitrak, side-curtain airbags, a locking rear differential, and a convenience package that includes adjustable pedals, remote vehicle starting system and rear park assist. The slt we drove had the nht suspension designed for maximum capacity trailering, with a special steering gear, shock absorbers, rear axle and tires. the suspension was comfortable and did a good job of isolating the bangs and bumps as we motored along gravel roads, with lots of good-sized rocks, through the arizona desert north of phoenix. but the truck also was comfortable and fully capable of being driven fairly aggressively on narrow paved roads that twisted up the yarnell grade and on through the mountains as we took the scenic back way into prescott. one of the trucks we drove had its bed loaded with heavy cargo and the brakes were good enough that nothing dramatic happened when we had to make a hard and fast stop. summarythe gmc sierra is all-new for the 2007 model year. It features new exterior styling and new interiors that can be ordered for pure pickup work or for more luxurious family-oriented duties. Smooth ride, sharp handling, serious capability. introductionthe ford f-150 comes in a broad range of models, yet they all seem to have nicely balanced suspensions that make them enjoyable to drive and well-designed, comfortable cabs. they offer a quiet and refined ride over dirt roads, rough pavement and freeway slabs. Yet they also offer controlled handling, with a minimum of body roll in corners. The steering is responsive for cornering and these trucks track like a laser beam on the highway. Brakes are smooth and responsive. The big 5. 4-liter v8 is smooth and quiet, and delivers quick acceleration. It's rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque and 15/19 mpg city/highway. The 4. 6-liter v8 and 4. 2-liter v6 engines perform well, also. the f-150 comes in six distinct variants to meet the different needs of a wide range of owners. Within those variants are three cab choices, three bed lengths, three bed styles, and a choice of powertrains. Ford claims more than 60 possible variations. The f-150 is known for its toughness, strength, and cargo capacity, while offering interior design and comfort. Its amenities show attention to detail. the base xl is surprisingly nice inside. The fx4's optional captain's chairs are comfortable. The lariat is classy and nicely equipped, with every known amenity. The king ranch has a western feel that's very inviting. The supercrew features a back seat that's roomy and comfortable for adults. Since then, the model lineup has expanded with new trim levels, variations, and specialty models. The 2007 models feature more than a dozen subtle improvements inside and out. Among them: seat comfort has been enhanced for 2007. A tire-pressure monitoring system now comes standard. Lariat and xlt models get new grilles for 2007. A 5. 4-liter e85 flexible fuel v8 is available, and power for the 4. 6-liter v8 is increased for 2007. A new dvd navigation system and sirius satellite radio are available, and an auxiliary audio input jack is now standard on most models. Power folding mirrors are now available on 2007 fx4 and lariat models, a useful feature for parking in tight quarters. towing and hauling capacities have been increased for 2007, and ford claims the f-150 is the most capable truck in its class. Properly equipped, a 2007 ford f-150 can tow 10,500 pounds or haul more than 3,050 pounds in the bed. lineupthe 2007 ford f-150 is available in six distinct trim levels: xl, stx, xlt, fx2/fx4, lariat, and king ranch. Each boasts its own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. engines include a 4. 2-liter v6, a 4. 6-liter v8, and a 5. 4-liter v8. The 4. 6-liter v8 comes standard in the popular models. It includes a dark accent billet-style grille insert with body color grille surround, unique 18-inch aluminum wheels, available 20-inch aluminum wheels, a chrome exhaust tip, fog lamps, unique captain's chairs with center console and floor-mounted shifter, and a body color front bumper, rear bumper, door and tailgate handles. the lariat is the luxury model, di. walkaroundin the late 1990s, f-150 went aerodynamically curvy, and although it remained number one in sales, not everyone liked the look. So for 2004, ford returned the f-150 to its square-shouldered roots, with a more utilitarian look that continues essentially unchanged for 2007. it's a functional look, but in its own way it's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram. In fact, the f-150 has a unique image, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. It's at once crisp, bold, and sturdy. in short, we think the f-150 is a great-looking truck. the f-150 shares styling cues with ford's handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp downward drop in the forward part of the door windows, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. the nose is square in concept, with a large, bold, big-rig grille opening. Yet the front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through to the tailgate. F-150 is both upscale and utilitarian, a look that's very appealing. the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, arizona beige on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch wear bar-style grilles. practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is more than 22 inches deep, for a generous margin when hauling larger cargoes. The basic xl is surprisingly nice. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which has a western feel that's very inviting. We love the king ranch, but it's not for everyone. in recent years we've found the f-150's front bench seats flat and unsupportive. The seats have been improved for 2007 models, however, and ford says they provide more support and comfort. The front bench is still split three ways: the center section flips down to reveal a console with storage and cup holders. The big difference in the back seats between supercrew and supercab models is rear legroom: 39. 0 inches for supercrew, 32. 7 inches for supercab. Bigger, faster, safer. introductionwatching the recent evolution of the toyota rav4, one might conclude that, like children, little sport-utility vehicles eventually grow up. The next they've grown longer, wider, and taller, with family-size, three-row seating capacity and available v6 power. Cute just isn't enough anymore, and the rav4 is a lot more than cute. after a complete redesign for 2006, the 2007 rav4 gets significant safety improvements. Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted, side-impact airbags are now standard equipment, as are roll-sensing side-curtain airbags for first and second-row seats. Both systems were extra-cost options last year. Electronic entertainment options have also been updated. the recent redesign addressed the buying public's demand for power and space among compact suvs. The rav4's length increased by 14 inches, creating more headroom and legroom for second-row passengers, and increased shoulder room all around. Cargo capacity grew by five cubic feet. Its 3. 5-liter v6 generates 269 horsepower, almost too much for the package, although it adds substantially to the rav4's capabilities. A v6 rav4 can haul as many as seven people and tow up to 3500 pounds, and it really scoots. Each model adds more features. all three trim levels are available with a 3. 5-liter, 269-horsepower v6 and five-speed automatic transmission, increasing the price as follows: base 22,885), sport 24,340) and limited 25,020). All v6 rav4's come with downhill assist control (dac) and hill-start assist control (hac). any of the six models is available with full-time all-wheel drive 1,400). standard features for all rav4s include air conditioning, cruise control, am/fm/cd stereo with six speakers, power windows, keyless-remote locking, manually adjustable passenger seats, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and auto-off headlamps. A rear-seat entertainment system 1,705) is available only on limited v6. safety features on all rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist (ba) and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc) and traction control (trac). we're glad to see that toyota has made curtain airbags standard for 2007, because they are designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatalities in those types of accidents. Side-impact airbags are designed to improve torso protection. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design of the 2007 model is more serious and more substantive than those built a few years ago. There are fewer superfluous curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished appearance. this latest rav4's front end contains all the same elements found on older models, but more tautly composed. The rectangular grille is rounder, the slits below more symmetrical. Headlights are more compact, fog lamps smaller and more focused. A wide track gives the rav4 a more solid stance, which is good news for resisting rollover in emergency maneuvers. a boxier shape defines the side view, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. From the front quarter oblique, the fatter, more upright c-pillar and taillight housing remind us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Taillights are positioned fairly high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate visually balances the spare by bolting into the lower left of the swing-gate, beneath a toyota logo and rav4 badge. interiorinside, the 2007 rav4 is as good as ever, but not necessarily better. Ergonomically, there's little to distinguish it from earlier models. The most noteworthy changes made for 2006 (and carried over this year) are some, shall we say, interesting styling cues. the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat enables almost any size driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row of seats improve the viewing range through the inside mirror. the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, without bolsters. It's no surprise, really, seeing as how the seat has to fit three people in a pinch. the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting the outboard second-row seats, is not especially easy, but it isn't as much of a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-sized sport utilities. the rav4's 104. 7-inch wheelbase delivers more than space for a third row of seats. It also allows almost six inches to be added to second-row legroom, compared to models built before 2006. Headroom in the second row also grew by more than an inch, although front-row occupants lost half an inch. the honda cr-v, the rav4's major competitor, has been redesigned for 2007, but the toyota still either exceeds it significantly, or trails it by a fraction, in headroom and legroom, both front and rear. But the cr-v does not offer a third-row seat. Maximum cargo volume (with all seats stowed) is nearly identical: 73. 0 cubic feet for the toyota, 72. 9 for the honda. the only competitor that comes with a standard third-row seat, the suzuki xl7, is also all-new for 2007. It provides more headroom than the rav4, particularly in the third row (by a significant 1. 6 inches). In legroom, the xl7 gives up half an inch to the rav4 up front, but gets that half inch back in the second row, and betters the toyota by almost a full inch in the third row. But in hip room, it's the xl7 that loses by 1. 6 inches up front, gains a scant 0. 7 inch in the middle, and then loses to the toyota by a whopping 5. 1 inches in the third row. placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who's owned a rav4. The placement and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good, as is the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. It's all styled differently, however. The dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we divined in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover. materials a.
